The Department of Physical Education and Sports stands as a centre of excellence, fostering a culture of high performance and holistic development. Established in 1966 with the founding of the College, the Department has a proud legacy of academic excellence and caters to nearly 2,400 students annually. The Department continues to evolve in response to contemporary educational needs, in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, by offering a flexible and holistic undergraduate curriculum that includes Discipline Specific Courses (DSC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC).
Under the leadership of Professor Dr. Manmeet Gill (HOD), the Department is strengthened by a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members — all five regular faculty members hold doctorate degrees and are recognised Ph.D. supervisors of Panjab University.
Besides the Department’s strong academic and research engagements, the Department has achieved unparalleled success by winning the prestigious Sir Shadi Lal Trophy for Excellence in Sports for the 12th time since 2008, sustaining a legacy of dominance over a decade. Additionally, the College has been the recipient of the K.K. Grover Runners-Up Trophy for the past four years. This year, our students have excelled in a variety of competitions at the International, National, All-India Inter-Varsity championships and Panjab University Inter-College levels.
The Department has recorded exceptional achievements, securing 21 first, 10 second and 3 third positions in Panjab University Inter-College competitions. Students have excelled at International, National, All-India Inter-Varsity and Khelo India University Games, winning multiple gold, silver and bronze medals. The College management supports student-athletes through scholarships, fee concessions, free hostel accommodation, diet support and sports kits. Graduates pursue higher education and professional careers while representing institutions and the nation at prestigious platforms.
The institution provides high-class advanced infrastructure including courts for Handball, Volleyball, Basketball and Lawn Tennis, Softball and Baseball grounds, Table Tennis facilities, an Athletics Track, an Archery Range, Multi-Purpose Indoor Facilities and a fully equipped Fitness Centre. The Department nurtures talent following a scientific and outcome-based training approach, integrating modern coaching from well-qualified coaches, with active student engagement promoted through mentorship, regular tournaments and experiential learning.

Five regular faculty members — all doctorate-degree holders and recognised Ph.D. supervisors of Panjab University — under the leadership of Dr. Manmeet Gill (HOD). The team brings specialisations across Sports Psychology, Volleyball, Basketball, Handball, Baseball, Boxing and Judo.

Four-year undergraduate B.A. programme with Physical Education, structured under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The curriculum includes Discipline Specific Courses (DSC) covering the science and practice of human movement, sport and fitness; and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) developing practical and applied competencies. Areas of study span anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, sports training, sports psychology and methodology of physical education.
Sports-quota admissions across all undergraduate programmes for outstanding student-athletes. Dr. Sonia Kanwar became the first Indian woman to earn the IBA 3-Star status in Maribor, Slovenia (2022), qualifying her to officiate at both the World Championships and the Olympics. In 2024, she also became the first Indian female to clear the prestigious World Boxing Exam at Colorado Springs, USA.
Dr. Sonia Kanwar officiated at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England from 2–14 September 2025, where a total of 459 boxers from 78 countries participated in this prestigious event.
Dr. Sonia Kanwar officiated at the South East Asian Games in Thailand (8–20 December 2025) and the Youth Futures Cup (Road to Youth Olympics) in Bangkok, Thailand (7–15 March 2026), and earlier acted as Referee at the World Championships, Colorado, USA (October 2024).
