The Bachelor of Arts at SGGS is offered under Panjab University's NEP Curriculum as BA (3 Years), BA Honours (4 Years) and BA Honours with Research (4 Years) — a multidisciplinary / interdisciplinary degree built around a Major / Minor framework across languages, social sciences and humanities.

Four pathways within the BA

BA (3 Years)

2200 seats · 3 years

The flagship multidisciplinary / interdisciplinary degree under NEP — three DSCs in Year 1, with Major / Minor selected before Year 2 and continued through Year 3.

BA Honours (4 Years)

Year 4 specialisation

An additional fourth year of advanced coursework in the Major discipline. The 4th year of all Honours courses will be subject to approval by Panjab University.

BA Honours with Research (4 Years)

Research track

The fourth year combines coursework with research work. Subject to approval by Panjab University.

Major / Minor Framework

From Year 2 onwards

Two Major and one Minor selected from the three DSCs chosen in Year 1. The degree awarded is Multi-disciplinary / Inter-disciplinary.

A candidate who has passed one of the following examinations with English as one of the subjects:

(i) BA / BA(Hons) Part I (Old Scheme) / Pre-Medical / Pre-Engg Intermediate Arts / Science / Agriculture examination of Panjab University;

(ii) the +2 examination under 10+2+3 system of education of a recognised University / Board / Council;

(iii) Prak / Shastri / Vishard examination with Compulsory English;

(iv) any other examination recognised by the University as equivalent to (i), (ii) or (iii) above.

• Students opting for Physical Education as an Elective Subject will have to appear for and qualify Cardiovascular Fitness Test, Cooper's 9- or 12-minutes Run / Walk Test. Dates for these tests will be displayed on the College Notice Board.

• Students opting for Mathematics should have passed 10+2 preferably with Mathematics as elective / optional subject.

BA II / III 3 - Year (NEP) A student who has passed BA I / II from PU Chandigarh or from any other University recognised by PU with same subjects / scheme of the prescribed course or shall have to pass the deficient subjects, subject to the availability of seats.
BA Honours (4 Years) & BA Honours with Research (4 Years) 4 - Year Note: 4th Year of all Courses — Honours & Honours with Research will be subject to approval by Punjab University.
General admission rules — Admission to all classes is made strictly as per eligibility and merit criteria laid down by Panjab University depending on available seats. Fraction of marks less than the requisite percentage will not be rounded off in the candidate's favour (i.e. 32.9%, 39.9% and 49.9% shall not be rounded off to 33%, 40% and 50% etc. respectively). Candidates having passed +2 without English from any recognised body are eligible to join BA, otherwise he / she has to pass the deficient English subject with the parent Board / University in two consecutive chances; failing which admission will automatically stand cancelled. Programme Overview

Compulsory subjects build the foundation

The BA programme at SGGS is structured under NEP around a combination of compulsory and elective components. Students select three Discipline Specific Courses (DSCs) in the First Year, out of which Major / Minor DSCs are selected before the beginning of the Second Year. Students entering the Third Year continue with the same Major and Minor subjects opted in the Second Year. Alongside DSCs, students take an MDC / IDC, SEC, VAC, English as the AEC, Punjabi (or History & Culture of Punjab), and an Internship or Community Outreach component.

Indicative — The compulsory and elective subjects listed reflect the broad shape of the BA. The above tables are subject to change, as the latest syllabus for the academic year 2026–27 has not yet been released by Panjab University. For the current semester-wise syllabus and the exact list of permitted elective combinations for the current session, please consult the latest Prospectus or Panjab University's official BA syllabus.

Compulsory Subjects

  • Discipline Specific Courses (DSC): Student is required to select 03 subjects in the First Year, out of which Major / Minor DSCs will be selected before the beginning of Second Year. Students entering the Third Year shall continue with the same Major and Minor subjects opted in the Second Year.
  • Multidisciplinary Course (MDC / IDC): Student is required to select 01 subject from the MDC / IDC options.
  • Skill Enhancement Course (SEC): Student is required to select 01 subject from the SEC options.
  • Value Added Course (VAC): Student is required to select 01 subject from the VAC options.
  • Ability Enhancement Course (AEC): English.
  • Punjabi or History & Culture of Punjab: Students who are not domiciled in Punjab and have not passed Punjabi up to class 10th / 12th can opt HCP in place of Punjabi.
  • Internship / Community Outreach: Students may undertake Internships in approved organisations / institutions to enhance employability skills or research aptitude. Community Outreach forms an integral part of the UG curriculum, connecting academic learning with societal engagement. BA students shall opt for either Internships or Community Outreach.

Indicative Elective Subjects

Student is required to select 03 subjects in all, selecting not more than one subject from the following sets of combinations (Mathematics can be opted by a student who has studied Mathematics at 10+2 level). At the end of the Second Semester, each student will select 02 Major and 01 Minor from the chosen three subjects.

Two Important Conditions

For specific elective subjects

Physical Education Elective

Students opting for Physical Education as an Elective Subject will have to appear for and qualify Cardiovascular Fitness Test, Cooper's 9- or 12-minutes Run / Walk Test. Only students who qualify the above Physical Fitness Tests will be allowed to opt for this subject. Dates for these tests will be displayed on the College Notice Board.

Mathematics Elective

Mathematics can be opted by a student who has studied Mathematics at 10+2 level. Students opting for Mathematics should have passed 10+2 preferably with Mathematics as elective / optional subject.

Duration

Three years (six semesters) for the BA, as per Panjab University's NEP curriculum, with an optional fourth year for Honours and Honours with Research tracks — subject to approval by Panjab University.

Eligibility

Pass in +2 with English as one of the subjects, or any other examination recognised by Panjab University as equivalent (see the table above for the full conditions and stream-specific requirements).
