The heart of the institution, Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library stands as a vibrant centre of learning, knowledge, and intellectual growth. Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the academic and professional journeys of countless students and scholars. Guided by the visionary leadership of distinguished Principals and Librarians, the library has evolved into one of the region’s richest and most modern knowledge centres — a spacious, two-storied, fully automated, digital, and multimedia-enabled facility.

An epitome of academic excellence, the library seamlessly integrates print and electronic resources to facilitate quick and efficient access to information for faculty members, researchers, and students alike. Continuous and meticulous efforts are undertaken to enrich and upgrade its resources in order to meet the ever-evolving educational and research needs of its users.

Committed to empowering its users with updated and reliable information, the library offers a highly user-friendly environment with diversified sections catering to varied academic interests and disciplines. Embracing modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the library provides advanced digital access facilities to its patrons. It is equipped with ten computers connected through a Local Area Network (LAN) and operates on the advanced SLIM21 (System for Library Information and Management) software, ensuring efficient and streamlined library operations. Broadband internet connectivity is also available for faculty members to support teaching and research activities.

To further strengthen access to scholarly resources, the library subscribes to renowned online databases such as DELNET and NDLI, enabling students, teachers, and research scholars to access a vast repository of electronic resources and academic materials.

The library also maintains a well-developed Reference Section that is regularly updated and refurbished. Dedicated sections for postgraduate departments, an extensive collection of religious literature, and a special repository devoted to Sikh Studies add significant value to its academic resources. At present, the library houses 53,848+ books, 23 subscribed journals, 15 magazines, 16 newspapers, and 369 CD-ROMs. Its special collections include Panjab University examination result gazettes up to 2005, newspaper clipping archives, and employment alert services.

This sanctum of learning is efficiently managed by a team of qualified, dedicated, and committed professionals who work collaboratively to ensure prompt and effective services for all users. Under the able leadership of Dr. Anita Chhatwal, the library and its team of ten staff members continue to uphold the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and knowledge dissemination.

Library Highlights

The Library is dedicated to providing personalized reference and information services through its rich and diverse collection. To preserve and promote cultural and intellectual heritage, it has established several special corners and sections.

Digital Library / E-Resource Corner

Keeping pace with modern Information and Communication Technology, the library has established a well-equipped Digital Corner. This section provides advanced computer systems with Internet connectivity and Wi-Fi access for faculty members. Users can access DELNET, NDLI databases, e-journals, and other open-access digital resources. A significant collection of educational CDs and DVDs is also available in this section.

Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library Blog

The library Blog has become a highly successful digital initiative with over 23 lakh visitors, offering 24×7 open access to Panjab University question papers, syllabi, college news clippings, and other academic updates.

Sikh Studies Corner & Maps Collection

These significantly enrich the academic and reference resources of the library. The Sikh Studies Corner provides valuable literature and reference materials related to Sikh religion, philosophy, history, and culture, thereby supporting research and learning in Sikh Studies.

Heritage Corner

It preserves and promotes the cultural richness of Punjab through an extensive collection of books and resources on Punjabi heritage, traditions, folklore, language, and literature. These specialized sections serve as important centres for cultural awareness, academic study, and research.

The Helen Keller Braille Section

This section promotes inclusive education by providing Braille books, magazines, and assistive technologies such as the LEX Instant Reader and Scanner for differently abled users, ensuring equitable access to learning resources.

Prof. Puran Singh Corner

It is dedicated to the life, philosophy, and literary works of the renowned scholar and thinker Prof. Puran Singh.

Book Bank Collection

Through the Book Bank Collection, meritorious and economically disadvantaged students are provided textbooks for the entire academic session.

Audio-Visual Collection

Includes CD-ROMs related to literature and various academic subjects, available for access in the library.

Job Alert Corner

The library also supports students’ career aspirations through the Job Alert Corner, which provides information regarding employment opportunities and competitive examinations — extending its services beyond physical boundaries.

Library Sections

From circulation and periodicals to technical processing, stacks and a quiet reading area — each section is designed for prompt and effective service.

Circulation Section

Located near the main entrance on the Ground Floor, the Circulation Section functions as the primary public service point of the library. Smart library cards enable students to access library services efficiently. The section manages the issue and return of books, membership registration and renewal, overdue reminders, maintenance of records and statistics, and inter-library loan services.

Books are issued using Barcode Scanner technology for accuracy and efficiency. The Browne Charging System is followed for students through a ticket-based issue system, while faculty and staff members use the Newark Charging System with passbooks. Since July 2005, most library operations have been computerized alongside manual record maintenance.

Periodicals Section

The Periodicals Section houses a wide collection of journals, magazines, and newspapers in various languages. The library regularly subscribes to 23 journals, 15 magazines, and 16 daily newspapers, providing readers with updated academic information as well as recreational reading material.

To preserve valuable resources, older periodicals are carefully bound and archived — the library maintains 833 bound volumes of journals for reference and research. Current issues are displayed in pigeon racks for easy access, and newspaper clipping files related to college achievements, admissions, vacancies, and sports accomplishments are systematically maintained.

Technical Section

Situated in the basement, the Technical Processing Section acts as the backbone of library operations by bridging acquisition and circulation. It is responsible for receiving, processing, labeling, organizing, and automating all library materials.

Major activities include classification of books according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC 22nd Edition), cataloguing through iSlim software, barcode generation, database updating, stamping and labeling of books, preparing weekly new-arrival lists, and transferring processed books to circulation. The section also maintains an efficient Online Open Public Access Catalogue (WebOPAC) system.

Stack Area

The Stack Area, located in the basement, contains a vast and regularly updated collection of books across various disciplines. Dedicated sections are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including M.Com, Sociology, English, Punjabi, MA History, MA Political Science, and BBA. The area is spacious, systematically organized, and designed to accommodate future additions to the collection.

The library provides a peaceful and comfortable Reading Area with seating capacity for approximately 60 readers, creating an ideal atmosphere for focused study and research.

Property Counter

A Property Counter Rack is placed at the entrance of the library where users can safely deposit personal belongings before entering. To ensure the security of library resources, a gate-checking system is implemented before users leave the library premises.

Binding Section

The Binding Section helps maintain the collection in excellent condition through careful binding and repair of library materials.

Basement Floor Highlights

The Basement Section houses extensive collections for Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies along with a dedicated quiet reading space for focused learning. It also preserves 833 bound journal volumes to support research and reference work. Blending traditional knowledge resources with modern digital facilities, the College Library continues to evolve as a vibrant center for learning, research, cultural preservation, and lifelong education.

Note: Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library functions on all working days except National Holidays and holidays declared by the Panjab University.

Loan Privileges

  • 2 books to Undergraduate and 4 books to Honours / Postgraduate Students are issued for a period of 14 days, with an overdue charge of Rs. 1/- per book per day if kept beyond 14 days.
  • 15 books to Teaching Staff and 5 books to Non-Teaching Staff are issued for a period of 30 days.
  • At the time of borrowing a book, the borrower shall deposit the reader’s ticket against which the books shall be issued. The reader’s ticket will be returned to the borrower when the book is returned to the library.
  • If lost, a duplicate Reader’s Ticket would be issued on payment of Rs. 50/-.
  • Books once issued should not be brought inside, unless it is to be returned.
  • Reference books, text books, rare books, periodicals, CD-ROM databases and other documents are placed in the restricted category and are not to be lent.
  • The Librarian may recall any book(s) from the borrower at any time after issue.

No Dues Certificate

Before the commencement of examinations, or before a student leaves college / migrates, he/she will have to obtain a ‘No Dues Certificate’ from the Library.

Replacement of Lost or Damaged Library Books

  • Members of the library shall be held responsible for any damage caused to books or any other library property and will be required to pay the prescribed penalty.
  • Members leaving the library must have all borrowed or issued materials checked by the library staff member deputed at the gate.
  • Any violation of the library rules may result in the suspension or forfeiture of library membership privileges.
  • In the event of a book being lost while in the custody of a borrower, the borrower shall replace the book in accordance with the library rules.
  • If a borrower fails to replace a lost or damaged book, a penalty shall be imposed as per the library regulations.
  • Any person found repeatedly losing or damaging library books may be debarred from using the library facilities.

General Rules

  • Users are not permitted to bring personal belongings such as books, files, briefcases, handbags, registers, etc., into the library. All such items must be deposited at the Property Counter located at the library entrance.
  • Users shall not write in, underline, or mark library books. All books are carefully examined upon return, and borrowers will be held responsible for any defacement, damage, or loss of books issued in their name. Such misconduct may result in the withdrawal of library privileges.
  • Users are requested to leave consulted books on the reading tables after use. The library staff will reshelve the books at their proper place according to the respective Call Numbers.
  • Complete silence must be maintained within the library premises. Only brief and low-volume communication with library staff at the Circulation Desk or other library sections is permitted.
  • Consumption of beverages and eatables is strictly prohibited inside the library.
  • The use of mobile phones inside the library is strictly prohibited. Non-compliance with this rule may result in a fine and/or suspension of library access.
  • Sleeping, unnecessary discussions, speaking loudly, causing disturbances, placing feet on tables or chairs, and inappropriate behaviour with colleagues are not permitted inside the library.
  • Members are encouraged to provide suggestions regarding the acquisition of books, journals, and other resources, as well as for the overall improvement of library services and facilities.

How to become a member, and the number of books and loan periods available to each category of member.

Library Membership

  • Students desirous of availing the library facility shall apply to the Librarian in the prescribed form obtainable from the library. After the process, the Librarian shall issue as many reader’s tickets as the number of books the student is entitled to borrow.
  • Faculty members are issued library passbooks upon receiving intimation of their appointment from the College establishment branch.
  • The Librarian, at her discretion, may allow other individuals to make casual use of the library.

* Teachers who have been granted UGC major projects are entitled to get issued those number of books that are purchased under the scheme, with the undertaking of returning such books after completion of the project.
