The Bachelor of Science at SGGS is offered under Panjab University's NEP Curriculum as BSc (3 Years), BSc Honours (4 Years) and BSc Honours with Research (4 Years) — a multidisciplinary / interdisciplinary degree with a Major / Minor framework across Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, Computer Science & Applications, Biotechnology and Microbiology.

Four pathways into the sciences

BSc (3 Years)

540 seats · 3 years

The flagship multidisciplinary / interdisciplinary degree under NEP — three DSCs in Year 1, with Major / Minor selected before Year 2 and continued through Year 3.

BSc Honours (4 Years)

Year 4 specialisation

An additional fourth year of advanced coursework in the Major discipline. The 4th year of all Honours courses will be subject to approval by Panjab University.

BSc Honours with Research (4 Years)

Research track

The fourth year combines coursework with research work. Subject to approval by Panjab University.

Major / Minor Framework

From Year 2 onwards

Two Major and one Minor selected from the three DSCs chosen in Year 1. The degree awarded is Multi-disciplinary / Inter-disciplinary.

A student who has passed the +2 examination under the 10+2+3 system of education of a recognised University / Board / Council with English as one of the subjects.

• Provided that a person joining the BSc / BSc (Hons) course must have obtained at least 35 per cent marks in the aggregate of the qualifying examination.

• Also if the student opts for BSc (Hons) with Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Botany / Zoology as Major / Minor subject, she / he should have passed Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Biology / Biology respectively in 10+2 examination; and for BSc (Hons) with Computer Science & Applications / Microbiology / Biotechnology as Major / Minor subject, she / he should have passed any science subject or any allied subject in 10+2 examination.

BSc II / III 3 - Year (NEP) A student who has passed BSc I / II from PU Chandigarh or from any other University recognised by PU with same subjects / scheme of the prescribed course or shall have to pass the deficient subjects, subject to the availability of seats.
BSc Honours (4 Years) & BSc Honours with Research (4 Years) 4 - Year Note: 4th Year of all Courses — Honours & Honours with Research will be subject to approval by Punjab University.
General admission rules — Admission to all classes is made strictly as per eligibility and merit criteria laid down by Panjab University depending on available seats. Fraction of marks less than the requisite percentage will not be rounded off in the candidate's favour. Candidates having passed +2 without English from any recognised body are eligible to join BSc, otherwise he / she has to pass the deficient English subject with the parent Board / University in two consecutive chances; failing which admission will automatically stand cancelled. Indicative Subject Plan

Indicative — The breakdown below shows the broad shape of the BSc under NEP. The tables are subject to change, as the latest syllabus for the academic year 2026–27 has not yet been released by Panjab University. For the current semester-wise syllabus by stream, please consult the latest Prospectus or Panjab University's official BSc syllabus.

Compulsory Subjects

  • Discipline Specific Courses (DSC): Student is required to select 03 subjects in the First Year, out of which Major / Minor DSCs will be selected before the beginning of Second Year. Students entering the Third Year shall continue with the same Major and Minor subjects opted in the Second Year.
  • Multidisciplinary Course (MDC / IDC): Student is required to select 01 subject from the MDC / IDC options.
  • Skill Enhancement Course (SEC): Student is required to select 01 subject from the SEC options.
  • Value Added Course (VAC): Student is required to select 01 subject from the VAC options.
  • Ability Enhancement Course (AEC): English.
  • Punjabi or History & Culture of Punjab: Students who are not domiciled in Punjab and have not passed Punjabi up to class 10th / 12th can opt HCP in place of Punjabi.
  • Internship: Students are required to undertake Internships in approved organisations / institutions to enhance employability skills or research aptitude.

Permitted DSC Combinations

Student is required to select 03 subjects in all, selecting not more than one subject from the following sets of combinations. Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics & Zoology can be opted by a student who has studied the subject at 10+2 level; Biotechnology, Computer Science and Applications & Microbiology can be opted by a student who has studied any science subject or any allied subject at 10+2 level.

A Distinctive Strength

Hands-on Laboratory Experience

The College maintains dedicated laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science and Biotechnology — equipped with the necessary instruments and apparatus. Students typically have sufficient access to equipment that individual hands-on practice is the norm, not the exception — a distinctive strength of our Science department.

Duration

Three years (six semesters) for the BSc, with an optional fourth year for Honours and Honours with Research tracks — subject to approval by Panjab University.

Eligibility

+2 with English as one of the subjects and at least 35% marks in aggregate. For BSc (Hons) with a specific Major / Minor, the candidate must have passed the relevant subject at 10+2 (see the table above for full conditions).

Career Opportunities

BSc graduates pursue MSc programmes, enter research, teaching, healthcare, data analytics, and technical roles. Many qualify for competitive examinations such as CSIR-NET, GATE, and state / central civil services.
