Overview

About the Department

An introduction to our history, our teaching philosophy, and the scholarly tradition we work within.

Established in 2023, the Department of Music at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College is dedicated to promoting musical excellence, preserving India’s rich cultural heritage and nurturing the artistic potential of students. The Department offers Music as part of the B.A. Programme and provides a balanced education that combines theoretical knowledge with practical training.

With a capacity of 80 students per class, the Department provides a vibrant and inspiring environment for learning and artistic development. It is well-equipped with a wide range of musical instruments — including sitar, tabla, harmonium, rabab, dilruba and tanpura — enabling students to receive comprehensive training and gain valuable performance experience.

Beyond academic instruction, the Department plays a pivotal role in the cultural life of the College — organizing and coordinating musical and cultural events and representing the institution at external platforms. It actively prepares and guides students for Youth Festivals, Cultural Festivals, Inter-College Competitions, Singing and Instrumental Music Competitions and Folk Music events at university, state and national levels, striving to transform them into skilled musicians, confident performers and responsible custodians of India’s musical traditions.
