Established in 1966, the PG Department of Political Science at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College has emerged as a vibrant area of academic excellence dedicated to nurturing informed, responsible and future-ready citizens. Supported by a team of seven accomplished faculty members with expertise in Political Science and International Relations, the Department offers B.A., B.A. (Honours), B.A. (Honours with Research) and M.A. programmes, and proudly remains among the pioneering institutions in Chandigarh to introduce postgraduate studies in the discipline.
The Department is committed to academic rigour and holistic learning through a blend of classroom teaching and interactive academic activities — including seminars, expert lectures, workshops, panel discussions, quizzes, documentary screenings and student presentations. Its student-centric approach fosters critical thinking, democratic values, intellectual curiosity and analytical skills, creating an engaging and enriching learning environment.
Academic excellence continues to be a hallmark of the Department, with students consistently securing university positions and distinctions in postgraduate examinations. Alumni of the Department have successfully pursued careers in civil services, law, public policy, journalism, research, international organisations, academia, NGOs, think tanks and corporate public affairs.

Two-year postgraduate programme covering Indian Foreign Policy, Constitution, Peace and Conflict, Major Themes in Recent Philosophy, Comparative Politics, International Politics and research-oriented coursework. Students consistently secure university positions and distinctions in postgraduate examinations and pursue careers across civil services, law, public policy, journalism, research, international organisations, academia and think tanks.
NEP-aligned four-year B.A. (Honours with Research) programme in Political Science with research methodology and a research dissertation component — preparing students for postgraduate research and direct entry to doctoral programmes.
NEP-aligned three-year Bachelor’s Honours programme in Political Science covering Indian Political System, Constitution of India, Introduction to Comparative Political Systems, International Politics, Understanding South Asia, Comparative Politics, Political Theory and related papers.
Political Science offered as a discipline within the multidisciplinary B.A. programme alongside elective combinations across the humanities and social sciences.

Organised by the PG Department of Political Science in collaboration with the PG Department of Sociology, the Department of Public Administration and the Dean Student Welfare. On Day 1 (Feb 11), research-oriented presentations were delivered by postgraduate students on the SGGSC Student Elections, analysing participation, representation and electoral dynamics. On Day 2 (Feb 12), a documentary titled The History of Indian Elections by National Geographic India was screened, followed by reflective discussion and academic interaction. PG students of the Department anchored the Fest.
The Department organised a Workshop titled Constitutionalism: Evolving Dynamics on March 20, 2025. Conducted by Prof Swarnjit Kaur, Department of Political Science, Centre for Distance and Online Learning (formerly USOL), Panjab University, Chandigarh.
The Department organised an ICSSR-sponsored National Seminar on Emerging Political Trends in India: Issues and Concerns of the North-Western Region on March 14, 2024. Keynote address by Prof (Retd.) Gurpreet Mahajan, Centre for Political Studies, JNU, New Delhi. The seminar featured a panel discussion with Prof Bhupinder Brar, Prof Pampa Mukherjee, Prof (Retd.) Jagrup Singh Sekhon and Prof Rajesh Kumar as panelists. Parallel technical sessions were chaired by Prof Swarnjit Kaur and Prof Kamla. Valedictory address by Prof (Retd.) Khalid Mohammed, Department of Evening Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

In the session 2025–26, two students of M.A. I secured PU positions: Ms Amarjeet Kaur (4th Position) and Ms Navjot Kaur (9th Position) in the University Toppers List. Six students of both M.A. I and M.A. II held distinction in the University Examinations (December 2025).
Several students of the M.A. programme have cleared the UGC-NET examination in Political Science, opening pathways to research and lectureship.
Priya Bhaskar (M.A. I) published The Quest for Rural Women’s Land Rights in India in Social Scholars magazine on October 11, 2025. Amarjeet Kaur (M.A. I) published One Nation One Election: Feasibility, Federal Implications, and Democratic Concerns in Contemporary India in Social Scholars magazine on October 27, 2025.
Kashika Sharma (M.A. I) proudly represented the Department at the prestigious National Dialogue held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi (January 9–12, 2026). The event brought together young participants from across the country, where Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering.
PG students of the Department anchored the Two-Day Political Science Fest on February 11–12, 2026 and delivered research-oriented presentations on SGGS College Student Elections, analysing participation, representation and electoral dynamics.
Mr Pavittarbir Singh Saggu, Assistant Professor, was awarded the Gold Medal for M.Phil. by Panjab University Chandigarh (2019) for his dissertation on Agriculture, Climate Change and Farming Community.
Mr Pavittarbir Singh Saggu authored Agriculture, Climate Change, and Farming Community (Lambert Academic Publishing, Moldova, 2021) along with 30+ research papers and policy commentaries across EPW, Mainstream Weekly, Modern Diplomacy, The Print, The Diplomat, E-International Relations and World Focus.

Currently pursuing Ph.D. on Agrarian Community and Climate Change in Punjab: A Study of Majha Region. Field research spans Amritsar and the wider Majha region with continuing publication output in EPW, Mainstream Weekly, World Focus and policy platforms.
Pursuing Ph.D. in International Relations at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara (2025–Present). Doctoral research examines securitisation, issue-linkage and regime resilience in the context of the Indus Waters Treaty in post-2019 India–Pakistan relations.
Pursuing Ph.D. at the Department of Political Science, Panjab University Chandigarh (2022–Present). Doctoral thesis examines The Abrogation of Special Constitutional Status of Jammu & Kashmir: A Comparative Study of Changed Realities in Jammu and Kashmir Regions, focusing on conflict, governance, gender and marginalised communities.
