Best Practice: Environmental Sustainability


SGGS College takes a big stride in reducing the Carbon Footprint of the region

1. Sri Guru Gobind Singh College initiated a novel idea of creating a mini forest on-campus with an objective to promote sustainable environment. This habitation will be a natural air-purifying dense forest with as many as 37 native species of trees. It will help in creating 30 times more oxygen than regular plantation and will be a hub of natural biodiversity. This unique technique of planting has been derived from Japanese Miyawaki technique which stresses on natural restoration of land using native plant species. It is a major step in reducing the Carbon Footprint of the region. Commemorating 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji, it has been aptly named ‘Guru Nanak Sacred Forest’. 550 native species of trees were planted as a tribute to Guru Nanak Devji’s ideology to live in harmony with the environment. A three day Workshop from April 1-3, 2019 was organised to create the Forest in collaboration with EcoSikh and Afforestt organisations committed to promoting environmental awareness. Students and faculty from various institutes of the region participated hands-on including a visit to Nepli Forest in the vicinity to study the native species of trees. Mr Debendra Dalai, IFS Chief Conservator of Forests & Chief Wildlife Warden, Chandigarh, Dr Dalip Kumar, ASPD RUSA, District Forest Officers of Punjab, SES Executive members along with participants planted 550 saplings in the Guru Nanak Sacred Forest while Bhai Manpreet Singh Kanpuri rendered Shabd Kirtan from Gurbaani. On April 23, 2019 the Forest was visited by S Kahan Singh Pannu, IAS Secretary, Agriculture & Soil Conservation & Mission Director, Tandrust Punjab and Commissioner, Food & Drug Administration and Director, Environment & Climate Change. He highly appreciated the contribution of the College towards regeneration of ecology.

2. An eco-green project, Saugaat – Gift a Sapling Scheme, was launched on Jan 23, 2019. This innovative practice was taken up to felicitate the dignitaries visiting the campus and to promote a greener way of life. The herbal saplings are developed in the Botanical Garden of the College.

In order to reduce the use of plastic on campus, Langar prepared by students and staff of the College was served to the Sangat on green pattals (plates made from leaves) on College Founder's Day. The use of thermocol glasses and plates has been banned in the College Canteen.

3. A Botanical Garden which houses the Herbal Garden caters to the research and laboratory work of students from Biotechnology and Botany. An aquatic pond with flora and fona is a model for study of the ecosystem. A Compost Pit has been created to collect biodegradable solid waste from the mess and canteen including dry leaves to prepare manure. A Workshop on Waste Management and Segregation was organised to promote techniques and strategies to combat waste.

4. Treated tertiary water is used on campus for watering the lawns, Botanical Garden and play grounds in order to conserve potable water.

5. Solar Energy is being used to operate geysers in the Boys' Hostel. Solar Lights are also installed on the campus.

6. The College has implemented e-communication to reduce the usage of paper and ink. The digitising of record has been started as a green initiative.
