Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, the first co-educational institute of higher education in Chandigarh, established by the Sikh Educational Society in 1966, is today one of the leading educational institutions of the northern India. With its modern infrastructure, qualified and dedicated faculty consisting of 157 members, backed by a capable administrative and non-teaching staff, the college is fully geared to honour its commitment for providing quality education, and imparting values enshrined in the personality and teachings of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, after whom the college is named.

The college building consists of two modern four-storeyed blocks - Arts Block and Science Block, providing a compact academic campus with clearly demarcated areas for different departments. The existing college infrastructure is further being augmented with a post-graduate block, construction work of which is in full spree. It will be functional within this new academic session. When complete, it will comprise of 12 Lecture Theatres, Faculty Rooms, Class Rooms, a Cyber Cafe, a Placement Cell and Office of the Alumni Association.

The college is affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh for B.A/B.Sc/ B.Com/ B.C.A/B.C.A (Hons)/M.Sc (Information Technology) & M.A Punjabi besides Hons in some Arts (History, Economics, Sociology, English), Science (Botany, Zoology, Chemistry) & Commerce.

The college has been granted extension of Affiliation in the following courses:-

(3)  P.G.D.C.A

(4)  B.Sc - I & II (Electronics)

Ours is the first college in Chandigarh which has the distinction of introducing Computer Science and Electronics as elective subjects in B.Sc. (Non-Medical).

The following Career Oriented Add-on programmes for B.Com. at first degree level have been sanctioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC) :-

(1)  Banking Management
(2)  Insurance Business
(3)  Entrepreneurship in Small Business

The students will be awarded certificate (after one year studies), Diploma (after two years studies) and Advanced Diploma (after three years studies) on completion of respective period

The College offers vocational course in 'Functional English' at the first degree level. This course provides an ample opportunity of employment. Admission to this course will be purely on the basis of merit only. The students of vocational course will be charged Rs. 100/- per month in addition to the normal fee.

The computer science department of the college boasts of well furnished air-conditioned labs with the most advanced computer systems comprising of Pentium IV processors. The systems are networked using LINUX and Windows 2000 supported by a powerful IBM Server. The College possesses all Licenced Softwares and Latest Antivirus Kits.

Apart from the normal Dial-up Connection the college also has an 256 KBPS cable to provide Internet access to the students. The department comprises of a theoretical rigor with real life applications. The faculty has been instrumental in building strong fundamentals, coupled with extensive, exhaustive and systematic training in classrooms and laboratories

The Computer Centre has been phenomenal in providing application-based training to students. The well-equipped centre provides access to special software for programming, database, system analysis, etc.

The curriculum of the department offers specialization in broad areas of software, hardware and computer applications.
