ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Under-Graduate Course of Commerce was established on 19th July, 1970 under the headship of Prof. R.C Kaushal. He served as Head of the Department for more than thirty years during the time 1970-2006. In the first session (1970-71), 60-70 students were admitted in the first year of B.Com course and 5-6 faculty members were appointed. Commerce course of the College was one of the popular courses among students to get admission. The College always achieved 90-95% pass result and most of the students secured merit positions in the Panjab University examinations. Department of Commerce started a “Commerce Society” in 1970-71 and two functions for the students were organized every year by the society.

The College has produced many meritorious students so far. Special to mention Rammi Kaushal of B.Com was the first University Gold Medalist from our Department; presently he is the Managing Director of US Company in Gurgaon. Sh. Suresh Arora, the present DGP (Punjab) and Sh. Virender Garg - a serving IRS are our valuable Alumni. Many other renowned entrepreneurs, leading educationists and senior Commerce faculty members of the region and other city Colleges are the product of our Department. Dr R.K Gupta Vice-Chancellor Maharaja Agrasen University Solan (H.P.), Dr. Rosy Walia-HOD Govt. College of Commerce and Business administration Sector-50 Chd, Mrs. Sita Verma HOD Commece MCM DAV College-36 Chd, Sh. M.P. Sharma Former HOD Commerce SD College-32 Chd are few to proudly mention.

The Post-Graduate Course of Commerce was started in the year 2004. With the growing demand of B.Com and M. Com course the faculty positions are increased to 24. Therefore, presently the permanent faculty members under grant-in-aid scheme are 21 out of which majority of them are doctorate and others are pursuing Ph.D . After superannuation of Sh. Kaushal, Sh. YPS Yadav and Sh. R.S. Chhiller served as Head of the Department. Department has seen the overall development under their leadership. Presently Dr. Tejinder Singh Brar is the Head of the Department. Department is progressing to meet the requirements of the time. We are organizing many functions, extension lectures, seminars, conferences and educational trips for imparting formal conceptual and overall balanced education to the target. The Department organizes various academic and real learning experience activities throughout the year.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Library: There is one main library in the College and it houses total 2000 books of Commerce Courses. Also the library subscribes to 21 journals in Commerce and management including 7 online Journals.

Internet facility for staff and students: Two computers with internet facility and access to e-journals are available in the library. The College further has well equipped computer labs with internet, in the Department of Computers which can be used by faculty as well as students.

Class rooms with ICT facility: Classrooms with interactive boards / LCD projectors are available for Power point presentations and other enhanced teaching-learning experience.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES YEAR WISE

Seminars, extension lectures and business talks are regularly organized for exposing the students to higher learning experiences. Cultural clubs and Association of the Department endeavor to encourage and groom the student’s personality and skills by involving them in various competitions and cultural activities. “EXPRESSION CLUB” organizes Expression Fest every year for students from different Colleges in and around Chandigarh. They participate in different competitions like Business Quiz, Debate, Poster Making, Sell Well, and Photography. Innovative themes are given to students for Debate and Poster Making like” Make in India”. Innovative management games are also played by students.

 

LECTURES ORGANIZED BY DEPARTMENT

Lectures were organized for the students on  the following topics “Commercial and Banking Insurance” ,”Leadership Competence Development”, “How to face interview”, “Preparing a Resume”,  “Personality development and interview skills”, “Mathematical tips to clear competitive exam”, “The Global Opportunities in Financial Planning and Career Development”.

 

EXTENSION / OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

Excursion trips are organized by the Department of Commerce to enrich the students with practical knowledge. During the session 2016-17 Department organized two tours. One was to Shimla on March 12, 2016. Total 45 students accompanied by the faculty members, visited the various places of Historical and other importance including the Ridge, Church Mall road, Jakhu temple. In another 3-day educational trip of 42 students visited Kullu, Manali and Manikaran Sahib on Oct 24-26, 2016.

During current session 2017-18 a 3-day trip of 35 students was organized to visit Manali and Manikaran Sahib on Feb 17-19, 2017. Another trip was organized to Jaisalmer from November 8-11, 2017. In total,42 students were accompanied by the faculty members.
