ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Economics was started in 1966, the year of establishment of the college, with thirty students under the able guidance of Mrs A.N. Singh, the then Head of the Economics Department. Prof. Amarjit Singh took classes in the Evening College, started in 1967 under the Principalship of Prof. J S Jogi. With the commencement of Commerce classes in 1970, the strength of the Economics students rose to 150. Mrs Harjit Kaur Khanna joined the department in 1971 and became the Principal of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women in 1976 and served there till 2001. When Prof. Manohar Singh became the Head of Department in 1991, Honours classes were started in the Departments of Economics and Commerce. Prof. Charanjit Singh took over the headship in 2004 and with his stringent efforts the Department scaled new heights and was upgraded to Post Graduate level in 2011.

The teachers of the Economics Department are engaged in imparting education to B.Com and M.Com students too. At present, there are ten faculty members in this Department sharing knowledge with around 1500 students. Four faculty members are PhD while others are pursuing their doctoral degrees. All faculty members are actively engaged in research, participate in various seminars and conferences at the National and International level and are members of various academic bodies.

The Economics Department has produced many entrepreneurs and educationists. Many students like Harman Mangat, Ankita Sharma, Gurpreet Kaur and Namita Chopra have cleared UGC-NET exam and others are admitted to PhD programmes in prestigious research institutions in India. Ankita joined as Assistant Professor in MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, Harman Mangat in SCD Government College, Ludhiana and Gurpreet Kaur in Mata Sundri College, Delhi University. Atamjit Singh Cheema and Avin Raghav have become successful entrepreneurs. Tarjit Singh, an ex-student, is pursuing Post Graduate Diploma in Global Business Management at Centennial College, Toronto. Binny Verma has completed her Post Graduate Diploma from Red River College, Winnipeg, Canada and is working in a reputed company in Calgary, Canada.

The students of the Economics Department actively participate in the Youth Festival, quiz competitions and other co-curricular events. Many students are active members of various NGOs. Maninderpal Singh, the pride of our department won the Swami Vivekananda Youth Award gold medal in 2012. In 2013, he got the Best Student Award and Punjab Government Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh State Youth Award. He was awarded National Youth Award 2013-14 for his achievements in NSS, social service and cultural activities by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India. He is also awarded Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar National Award 2018. He was adjudged the best folk dancer for three consecutive years 2010, 2011 and 2012 by the Panjab Univerity, Chandigarh and was also awarded the University Colour in folk dance. Our student, Bhupinder Singh, an outstanding NCC cadet of NCC Directorate Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh was selected as the Indian Ambassador to Singapore and was honoured by the Governor of Chandigarh at Raj Bhawan for his numerous achievements.

Over the years, the students from various countries like Kenya, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan have joined this Department.

  • The Department room of Economics is equipped with a Library and a Wi-Fi enabled computer (Room no 242).

  • Two exclusive classrooms are there for the postgraduate students.

  • Classrooms for the undergraduate classes are allotted as per timetable in the main building of the college and smart classrooms are also available on-demand.

  • Around 2500 books of Economics are available in the main library of the college. Also the library has subscription to 12 journals in Economics

The core ideas communicated by the speakers were the significance of the design of the corporate model, human happiness and moral capital for ensuring sustainable progress.

A Panel Discussion on ‘Punjab’s Progress: 1966 onwards’ was organised by the department. The panellists included eminent economists such as Professor Sucha Singh Gill (CRRID, Chandigarh), Professor R S Ghuman (CRRID, Chandigarh), Professor B S Ghuman (PU, Chandigarh), Dr M A Beg, (University of Delhi) and Professor D K Madaan (Punjabi University, Patiala). The experts discussed how the misplaced priorities of the state budget have led to misallocation of resources and accumulation of debt.

A National Seminar on ‘Entrepreneurship Development in India: Challenges and Opportunities’ was organized by the department. Prof R S Bawa, VC Chandigarh University was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Session. The Keynote Speaker was Dr G S Batra, Prof and Head, Department of Management Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala. Dr Indu Bala, (Chairperson, Department of Economics, PU, Chandigarh) and Dr Narinder Kaur, (Principal, University Constituent College, Mirapur) were the Guests of Honour. The seminar was chaired by Prof S K Chadha, (UBS, Chandigarh). At the Valedictory Session, Professor Sucha Singh Gill (Director, CRRID, Chandigarh) was the Chief Guest and Prof R S Ghuman (CRRID, Chandigarh) was the Guest of Honour.

Around 90 teachers, scholars and students presented their papers on the themes of the seminar. On this occasion, a book edited by Dr Kanwaljit Kaur was also released.
